Meet Dr. Justin Shmalberg: the veterinarian behind NomNomNow. Dr. Shmalberg is a practicing vet and clinical associate professor of integrative veterinary medicine at a leading college and brings years of experience formulating healthy, fresh, home-cooked diets for pets across the country. He has published numerous scientific papers in veterinary medicine, frequently lectures on nutritional topics to veterinarians and pet parents, and is one of less than 100 board-certified specialists in small animal clinical nutrition in the country. Dr. Shmalberg guides NomNomNow in all recipe formulation and advises on pet nutrition.

Feeding your pet fresh, gently-cooked food can promote health and wellness. Because the food is free of preservatives, fillers, and never frozen, your cat or dog's body will be able to use more of what they eat - putting the healthy nutrients, like vitamins, minerals, proteins, and carbs to good use. Some benefits include:

More energy: Pets consuming fresh food made with real ingredients have more readily available energy from food. This is because fresh diets are more digestible, and therefore more of the food is absorbed for energy.

Stronger immune system: Fresh pet food is rich in good vitamins like A and C, as well as zinc. According to Dr. Shmalberg, these all can help an animal's immune system stay strong and healthy, keeping them well.

Shiny coat, healthy skin, bright eyes: Fresh food for dogs and cats is rich in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients; which are known to promote a healthy coat and skin (zinc, B vitamins, and fatty acids from ingredients such as fish oil), as well as healthier eyes (vitamin A). Many pet parents report these as the first changes of feeding their pet a fresh diet.

Less waste: Without extra fillers, most of the components of a fresh diet are utilized by the pet's body. This means less waste, and fewer poop bags or time cleaning the litter tray!

I am Justin Schmalberg. I am a board-certified veterinary nutritionist who works with NomNomNow. I got interested in natural nutrition and innovative ways of feeding pets based on experience with my own dog, who suffered from a number of chronic conditions. Through that health journey with her, I discovered sort of interesting things about diet, nutrition, and really a passion for veterinary medicine.

At the time, I was doing something completely unrelated and decided that really in memory of this dog, as well as for other dogs and other people on this journey, that I would move toward looking at natural nutrition, whole foods nutrition in the context of a broader input towards veterinary medicine, and how integrative medicine can be used to foster the wellness of pets.

I spent time in general primary opinion practice, sort of learning about the common nutrition questions that pet parents frequently encounter, as well as the different diets that are available and those things that were not available on the market. Through that journey, I came back to the University of Florida. There, I completed a two-year intensive program, where I really only did veterinary nutrition, researching things about dietary supplements and different diets, and since then have been board certified as a specialist in nutrition.

I am also a specialist in rehabilitation and sports medicine for small animals and again, trying to figure out how we approach the health and wellness of all pets through a comprehensive strategy. One of the most important strategies (and one of the things that is done daily) is feeding pets, so we hope through a journey of innovation that we find ways to really tailor and customize nutrition to contribute to longevity and wellness so that everyone can enjoy their pet as long as possible.
